Surgical dressing refers to any fibrous material that is used to provide protection to exposed tissues and keep wounds in a hygienic and proper manner. Usually made from fibres as well as fabrics, gauze, lint, and plasters, it is placed over a wound as a protective covering. Surgical dressings include sterile pads, compress, or composite waterproof multi-layered bandages, which are most commonly used as a wound covering. A surgical dressing, as opposed to a bandage, is formulated to be in direct contact with the wound, and most of them are self-adhesive. Three-layer surgical dressings contain semi- or non-adherent lower layers to infuse water into the following layer, while preventing it from sticking to the granulated tissue. In addition to protecting the wound from mechanical damage and absorbing drainage, surgical dressings protect the wound from contamination by bodily discharges, such as feces and urine, provide a physiologic environment conducive to healing, and offer mental and physical comfort for the patient.
